Where did the idea for Bubba Ho-Tep come from?

A glimpse at the origins of the original Bubba Ho-Tep idea.

So where did the idea for Bubba Ho-Tep, precursor to planned prequel/sequel Bubba Nosferatu, come from? Well the original short story came from Joe Lansdale and he recently gave a little insight into this question in a recent interview. "... Speaking of ideas, how did Nacogdoches writer Joe R. Lansdale come up with "Bubba Ho-Tep," his 1994 novella-turned-movie about Elvis Presley alive and residing in a nursing home that's being terrorized by an ancient Egyptian mummy? That's what one of the 17 faithful, who, despite punishing rains, showed up at BookPeople March 13 to hang out with Lansdale, wanted to know. "My mother had a traumatic head injury and wound up in a rest home," Lansdale explained. "I watched and observed." Then he added, "And my brother recorded at Sun Records" — where the King got his start. ..." So there you have it. It doesn't sound like there was an epiphany moment that came to Mr Lansdale in a dream, the idea for Bubba Ho-Tep seems to have been conceived from of a number of random connections in his life. So there you have it!
